Executive Director Update June 2012 – We Righted a Civil Union Wrong!

Submitted by on 06/26/2012 – 12:43 PMNo Comment
Last week, we made queer history, here in Vermont and headlines across the nation, by righting a Civil Union wrong that deeply hurt Outright Vermont nearly a decade ago.  In the late 1990s, we were funded directly by the Vermont Department of Education (VT DOE) for anti-bullying and basic “queer 101″ education in Vermont schools. Homophobic pressure, during the Civil Union debates, on VT lawmakers convinced them to cut this funding.  It was never restored – until now.

We are so proud to stand in partnership with the VT DOE, the Governor’s office, and the hundreds of schools around the state who believe in our work to make schools safer for all young people.  Read more about this victory on our website.

This summer is already promising to keep us all on our toes!  In just a short 6 weeks, we launch the second annual CAMP OUTRIGHT with our partners at YWCA Vermont . We closed registration with double the number of campers as last year – that is 80 QUEER YOUTH – wow!

Many of these campers still need sponsors to help them afford the cost of camp.  Learn more about how you can make this experience happen for a queer camper on the CAMP OUTRIGHT website.
