July Clothing Drive for VT Queer Youth

Asa Carter, our friendly neighborhood Outright Intern has started a clothing drive for Outright Vermont as Phase 1 of his LGBT Homeless Youth Awareness Project. Other phases will involve a public screening of Susie Graf’s Lost in the Crowd, a documentary about homeless LGBT youth in New York City and a fashion show! The goal of the project is to raise awareness of an issue that affects thousands of young LGBT people across the nation, and to encourage outreach and discussion.

In the United States, there are an estimated 1.6 to 2.8 million homeless youth; what’s more is that 20 to 40% of those youth identify as LGBTQ, compared to the 5-10% of the overall youth population. These youth were often kicked out of their homes due to their identification as lesbian, gay, and transgender. Many turn to drug abuse, sex work, or suicide as a result of their life-shattering rejection from their families and friends. Studies indicate that once homeless, LGBTQ youth are at higher risk for victimization and suffer higher incidents of mental health problems and unsafe sexual behavior than straight homeless youth.

Vermont is fortunate enough to have an organization like Outright Vermont which provides a safe, healthy and supportive environment for LGBTQ youth, where they can hang out and feel free to be themselves without repercussions.

One of the services that the queer space provides is a free clothing shelf, where youth can take items that they fancy, and we’d love to increase the current selection!

Please join in our call for clothing donations in the month of July. Any gently used/new clothing items of all sizes/genders/styles would be immensely appreciated!

You can drop off said items of clothing at the Outright Vermont offices at the McClure Multigenerational Building at 241 North Winooski Ave in Burlington. Drop-off hours are Tuesday-Friday @12pm – 8pm, and Saturday @12pm – 5pm.

We will be accepting donations from now until July 31, 2012!

If you wish to contribute but don’t have clothes to give, we also accept monetary donations!  You can donate on our website – click on the link at the top of the page.
