Workshops

Outright Vermont provides workshops, trainings, and presentations for private and public schools at all levels (elementary through college), social service agencies, non profits, and other social justice groups. These workshops are individually catered to meet the needs and content requests of each audience. Many of these requests center around how to address anti gay bullying, how to create safe spaces and inclusive intake procedures for queer youth, basic “queer 101” featuring basic sexuality terminology and the intersections homophobia and sexism, and “trans 101” including deeper discussions about the gender binary, transgender youth, and how to be an ally.

Our audiences regularly include students, educators, administrators, and youth service providers. Each year we reach between 2,000-2,500 people through these workshops.

Outright's presentations are custom designed for each school, agency, or community group. To support these presentations, we ask for a minimum honoraria or $75.00/hour plus round trip mileage from our Burlington office. Additional charges may apply for training materials such as videos, handouts, manuals, etc. Discounts are available for half-day and full-day trainings.

Queer 101

Did you know that over 10% of the population is gay, lesbian or bisexual (GLB)? Did you know that 1 in 4 people have someone in their immediate family who is GLB? Did you know that 3 in 4 people have friends, coworkers, teachers, etc who are GLB? And these stats don't even talk about gender variant, gender queer, or transgender folks! Think how many more people are living happy, healthy lives outside the gender binary! (What is the gender binary? Find out in this workshop!)

This workshop is about finding common vocabulary and understanding what sexual orientation is, by starting with the basics like “sex” and “gender.” This is a fabulous workshop which will teach you how and why to toss the “queer eye for the straight guy” stereotypes about queer people and how you can support friends, family and co-workers who might happen to be queer.

This is a fun and interactive workshop that really pushes you to expand your horizons of what you consider “normal.”

Act OUT! Everyday Activism for Queer Folk & Allies

We live in a world where many people assume things about each other, either due to appearance, actions, or what people say. The biggest assumption is that everyone is heterosexual.

Statistically we know this is not true, in fact according to some studies, at least 1 in 10 people identify as "queer" or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning. If 10% of the population is queer, than why is it so common to hear the slurs “that’s so gay” everywhere you go? Even with good intentions, words have power and can hurt more than many realize.

This workshop helps queer or allied folks, teachers or students, parents or kids, learn how to address homophobic language and how to be more inclusive of all identities. You can make a difference everyday---learn how.

“That’s so Gay!” Addressing anti-gay bullying at school (or in your space)

Make your school a safer place for LGBTQ students, staff, and families. Some of the things we’ll cover: how to confront name calling and put downs, what to do when there is a bias incident, the safety and legal rights of students and staff, Gay/Straight Alliances and why they are important, and the responsibilities of teachers, administrators and students in the halls, classrooms and beyond. You can make a difference, come learn how!

"SOFFAs and How to be a Transgender Ally"

This workshop is for anyone who wishes to become or be a better ally for transgender folks or for those who otherwise bend gender. A prior understanding of gender, transgender, and sexual orientation terminology and issues is a plus, but not required.

We use an “old school” workshop format where you will be: taught (finally) what SOFFA stands for; challenged to consider how you benefit from the gender binary; asked to participate in fun and thought-provoking exercises; given tools to help you make a difference for transgender friends or family and bust the gender binary on a daily basis.
