School clubs centered around the interests of queer and trans youth and allies were originally called “Gay Straight Alliances” or GSAs. Many groups in Vermont found that terminology limiting and chose to call themselves “Queer Sexuality Alliances” or QSAs. Nationally, terminology changed in 2016 such that GSA came to stand for “Gender and Sexuality Alliance.” So in the fall of 2017, as a whole, students in Vermont’s QSA’s chose to adopt the “GSA” terminology. Not all have done so, and some groups are still referred to as QSA’s or have other local names.
